Tattered Quilt Camper Tea Towels and Pillows

As I mentioned in yesterdays's post! I love creating using free form stitching or sewing illustration technique.

Creating Camper or Airstream inspired flour sack tea towels has been on my long list of new items to create for this market season. I plan on creating them using cotton fabrics, vintage trims, vintage buttons (door handles) and of course, use the free form stitching technique.

Two weeks ago, I went to an estate sale - after not having time to go to any Estate Sales for months. Between the 6th grade memory book and substitute teaching assignments (many on Thursday's and Friday's) I had not been able to go to any estate sales. I missed them!

At this estate sale, I found two great finds. A tattered quilt and a huge collection of vintage paper dolls. I am sharing the vintage paper doll collection with my friend Amy (owner of the Pink Attic Cat) who also loves paper dolls. We will sort though them sometime later and I will share photos on my blog. Probably sometime in June or July.

Getting back to the tattered quilt. Immediately I knew this tattered quilt would become the top half of my new Camper/Airstream Tea Towels! My initial sketched plans changed with this tattered quilt find. I continue to enjoy the creative process. This tattered quilt became the focal point and used cotton fabrics and vintage trims that would complement the vintage quilt portion of the Camper. I have learned to listen and follow my creative voice. I am pleased with the results and grateful so many people have like my Camper Tea Towels on Instagram (IsaCreationsVintage).

I created 16 Camper Tea Towels and 6 Camper pillows. The pillows have a zipper, which allows the pillows to be washable.

All my new handcrafted items will be available tomorrow at A Paris Street Market in Aspen Grove. Rain or Shine, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Vintage Hexagon Quilt Pieces Re-purposed (Part 2 of 2) & For the Love of Vintage at the Pink Attic Cat

I continue with more photos of my newest re-purposed items.

Love working with the Hexagon Quilt Pieces I found at an estate sale last summer (2015). Re-purposed these vintage gems into functional and decorative kitchen towels. All towels are 100% cotton and created using vintage trim.

Also, a reminder of my friend Amy's Pop up event at the Pink Attic Cat tomorrow, Thursday through Saturday.

 

I highly recommend attending the CreativiTea. Amy gives everyone access to a great assortment of wonderful vintage materials to create something special. I will be helping out at the shop. I love to watching Amy's customer's create wonderful one of a kind items, just in time for Valentine's Day.

This one is a bit different than the others. I used a vintage embroidered pillow case and re-purposed it into a kitchen towel. This is one of my favorites, perhaps became I remain drawn to hand embroidery and butterflies.

 

January was a good productive month!

I have also been working on my basement Studio space. I have been de-cluttering. Trust me, that has been quit a challenge. That project is still in progress but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am pleased with the results so far.

 

Lots of old scrapbook papers and stamps have found new homes with several of my creative friends, including the Art class at my neighborhood elementary school where I work as a substitute teacher.

After I get my Isa Creations books all taken care of, I plan to continue to work on more vintage quilt pieces. Including a large stash of square quilt pieces I found during the summer of 2014 during a trip to my hometown of El Paso, Texas. This find is special to me because my sister and Robert's sister Bea went with me to an estate sale in the Rio Grande Valley. I see these square quilt pieces becoming houses and roofs (maybe even a camper) in the future.

Vintage Hexagon Quilt Pieces Re-purposed (Part 1 of 2) & For the Love of Vintage at the Pink Attic Cat

In the last few years, I realized what I re-purpose or create depends largely on my local estate sale finds. Every once in a while, I find true treasure. For me, it usually involves unfinished embroidered quilt pieces which I can re-purpose into a number of things. It can be a pin cushions, a bag (different types), a garland/ bunting or even a pillow.

Last summer I was lucky enough to find hand stitched quilt pieces. I have worked with tattered quilts but not pieces yet to be put together into a quilt. The color combination had absolutely no color coordination. It was literally scraps of fabrics, all colors and textures stitched together. I love how randomly these pieces were put together.

Working with these type of quilt pieces was a challenge for me. I usually know what something will be re-purposed into. This time; however, I had to take time to figure it out.

All it took was a trip to Walmart, Target and TJMaxx in early January. I found an assortment of flour-sack white cotton towels and colorful but basic kitchen towels. It really started with a pack of flour sack white cotton towels I found at Walmart. In that moment, I knew how I would use those special quilt pieces. In my 2 previous post, you can see how I re-purposed the wedding ring quilt pieces into one of a kind kitchen towels.

However, in this post I will share what I did with the vintage Hexagon Quilt Pieces. Again, the color combination for these pieces may not be traditional but I love them as well. My first rule is every piece of vintage linen I use is washed in hot soapy water. This also means, it all has be ironed. A tedious part, I admit, but necessary.

I fused the hexagon quilt pieces (used wonder under fusible web) to an assortment of white four sack or colorful cotton kitchen towels. I added a new favorite of mine, vintage pom pom trim and of course, my most used trim - vintage rick rack trim (ALL the trim I use is ALWAYS washed in hot soapy water and iron as well). Some kitchen towels have lace or crochet trim.
