Last Friday and Saturday finally got around to sewing more lined zippered bags to fit iPads and Nook/Kindle Fire tablets.  Along with pencil pouch bags/cosmetic lined bags.  Unfortunately, my sewing machine started to fail on Saturday.  I had to switch and use my daughter's starter sewing machine.  Rather loud but at least it works, unlike mine.

I had it repaired in the Fall but now it has other problems.  I will probably buy a new one on Wednesday and hopefully get more bags (Vintage Linens) sewn so they can be available for Sugar Plum Bazaar.

I will post pictures of the bags tomorrow....I hope!

Vintage Dress Pattern Illustrations Altered Dominoes Pendants

In less than two weeks, I will have my first show of the season.  Spring Sugar Plum Bazaar will be at the Parkside Mansion at 1859 York Street, Denver on April 26 & 27, 2014.  I just finished packaging my newest creation of

Vintage Dress Pattern Illustrations

Altered Dominoes Pendants.

I have created many more than I anticipated, I will explain why in a minute.

Believe it or not, the photo above is just a sampling.  I think I created about 80+ different designs and about 240 in total.  Crazy, I know!

I love old vintage dress patterns.  Whenever I see them at estate sales, I get them.  I have also found some at the thrift store.  More recently, I purchased 3 Vintage Home Catalogs on Ebay.  I started by scanning all of the patterns.  Editing was done as many of  the patterns or illustrations were in less than pristine condition.  After editing, I cropped the image to fit a dominoes; then I re-sized them to print in a 2 x 1 image.  I know, it was a lot of steps and time but I wanted the original images onto my altered dominoes pendants.

I had collected many more patterns than I realized.  I had so many that I only scanned 1 of the 3 Home catalogs because I just got tired of scanning and editing....I wanted to get to the really fun part, altering the domonies.

The reason I ended up with so many altered dominoes is the first batch of 100+ were done using a dimensional glaze by Ranger.  Turns out, overnight out of nowhere, bubbles formed on the dominoes.  I was not happy with the results at all.  In fact I was very disappointed because when I applied the glaze, I either had no bubbles or had popped the few bubbles I could see.  The fact that the glaze developed all these bubbles overnight was deflating.

Despite the setback, I was determined to find a way get these altered dominoes done right!  A little bit of research and bit of faith in my skills, I decided to apply resin to the altered dominoes.  For best results, using the resin also required I purchase a mini gas torch.  That was actually scary.  However, it's the carbon dioxide in the gas torch that eliminates any bubbles in the resin.  So I continued to move forward with resin and mini gas torch and created ANOTHER batch of 100+ altered dominoes.

I am very happy with the resin results.  The initial batch of 100+ dominoes with the glaze really looked bad next to the resin dominoes.  Not wanting to waste anything, I salvage those dominoes by re-doing them and this time using the resin.  So, although I started out with a goal of 100+ altered dominoes for the Spring Sugar Plum Bazaar, I ended up with twice as many.

Initially, I was just going to create the pendants and have chains available for sale separately.  I thought I would place the altered dominoes pendants in bowls or trays at my booth.  However, my space at Sugar Plum Bazaar is the smallest one I have ever had.  The spaces are assigned and I never know what size I will end up with.  So, taking into consideration the limited booth space, I decided the best way to display these pendants is to clip them to one of the my display door frames with chicken wire.  This meant, I needed to package each pendant in it's own little clear bag.

I was going to cut white card-stock and attach the pendant to it.  Then I realized, I had all the vintage patterns already digitized!  I decided to take the extra step and take the time to print the pattern image on card-stock.  This final step was more time consuming that I thought, but almost everything I do is that way.  The packaging and the altered dominoes MATCH!  What do you think?

These are vintage patterns to create wedding dressed for Barbie!

Sometimes, I do think I take more time than I should when I create many of my hand-crafted items.  I have high expectations of myself and I hope my customers can see that and appreciate that extra step and effort.

So there you have it, the story behind my Vintage Dress Pattern Illustrations - Altered Dominoes Pendants.  You can find them at my next show, Spring Sugar Plum Bazaar.

While I get back to sewing more items I want to have at Spring Sugar Plum Bazaar, I will continue to post additional photos of my new altered dominoes the next few days.

Our Spring Break to Texas...Why it did not happen.

It has been a while since I have blogged.  There have been many reasons.

First of all, I am thankful to God who took care of all 4 of us and allowed us to walk away from a horrible car accident.  On March 22, 2014 we were happily on our way to Austin,Texas to visit our family.  We were going to spend the night somewhere in Kansas.  At least that was the plan.

On Friday evening, (the day before) our Ford Excursion would not start.  On Saturday morning, David took the batteries to Sears who had them checked.  One was bad and needed replacing.

Our water heater at home had been acting up.  Before jumping into the shower, we had to make sure the water heater was working.  If it was not, we had to relight the pilot light.  We thought we could wait until we returned from Texas to replace it.

Car trouble and water heater were two factors in delaying our trip to Texas.  Our plans to leave in the morning quickly faded with these two problems/delays.  So, we left much later.  I try not to think about "what if" because it can just make you crazy; but it's impossible not to.

We were just 6 miles west of Limon, CO.  We knew a light snow had fallen earlier.  When we left Denver, it was snowing lightly but that is not a big deal, especially when the day earlier it had been so warm.  As soon as the snow hit the ground, it melts. Turns out in the plains, temperatures can drop suddenly and the road can flash freeze quickly.  As we were on the road, it was cloudy but it was not snowing or raining.  Without any warning, we suddenly hit black ice, lost control as the truck swerved across both lanes (thankfully no other cars were near us), then we spun around a full 360 across two lanes when suddenly it felt like we were sucked into a hole (actually when down a hill) and rolled over.  The entire time, all I remember is I kept repeating, "we will be okay."  I had no other thought.  I have to think I truly believed it because there was no other thought in my mind. I wonder about that.  What made me think or believe that?  I don't know.  Perhaps it was just having faith.

The impact was hard but thankfully, we all checked on each other to realize we were all okay.  We were shaken, full of dirt but okay.  The glass in the truck shattered.  I just remember seeing broken glass and dirt and everything inside the truck completely was turned over.  We immediately knew our truck was totaled.  It's amazing how cold we all were.  Strangers stopped to help us.  David and Laura had to crawl out while Alex and I were able to open the door.   A sweet young woman traveling from Idaho to Oklahoma had us seat inside her warm car while the Limon police, EMT's and firemen came to help us.  The EMT's drove us to a hotel in Limon.

Since Laura gets carsick when she rides in the back on road-trips, she sits in the front passenger seat.  We did not realize until Sunday, when we retrieved the rest of our belonging from the truck,  (at the salvage yard)  how close it was for this to have been a catastrophe event for our family.  The damage to our truck is horrific.  It's so bad, I won't post pictures because I don't want my parents or my mother in law to see them.  I posted about this on my personal Facebook page and did not post pictures for the same reason.

The damage to the front passenger area was the worst.  The bent metal frame came only inches from Laura's seat.  We thanked God for taking care of us and letting us all walk away on Saturday, but it was on Sunday when we realized how lucky we really were.  Our family was intact.  Our family was relatively unharmed. God took care of us, and perhaps a few Guardian Angels too.

My friend Staci and her husband Ron drove to Limon on Sunday (March 23 - also my son's Alex birthday) to take David and Laura to the Denver airport to rent an SUV.   Limon does not have any rental car companies.  David and Laura then drove back to Limon to pick Alex and I up at the hotel.  After we retrieved our belongings from the truck, we drove back home to Littleton. We were back home Sunday night.

Sadly, our plans were to celebrate Alex's birthday with the Wagner family in Austin.  Alex was sad that his birthday was not what we expected; however, we were also thankful we were all alive.  When we got home we were touched by the surprise our next door neighbors had prepared for Alex.  Ryan is Alex's best friend.  Ryan and his family decorated our front door with birthday wrap and a homemade sign to greet Alex.  This not only made Alex smile but us as well.  We are grateful to have so many wonderful friends.  The photo of our  decorated front door in on my phone.  I will try to add it later.

During our Spring break we dealt with replacing a water heater, insurance, and taking Laura to the doctor.  On Tuesday, March 25, we learned Laura actually suffered a minor concussion and a bit of whiplash.  She has been receiving physical therapy for her neck and shoulder.  The high school has her on a concussion protocol which means her workload can be lighted a bit and has been benched from playing tennis.  When she gets home from school, she is exhausted.  She has had to come home from school early a few times. She is getting better but it will just take some time for her to fully recover.

On Wednesday,March 26, we tried to salvage our Spring Break.  We went on a day trip to Colorado Springs.  Yes, we all had some road anxiety about being back on the road but I suppose that is natural and with time and future road-trips it will all get better.

Alex loves dinosaurs, so as a birthday treat, we went to the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center in Woodland Park, near Colorado Springs.  Alex loved it!  He thought it was a great birthday gift.   Afterwards, we drove to Manitou Springs.  We had a great family time.  We played many video games in an arcade area in Manitou Springs.  We had a delicious pizza dinner then headed home to Littleton.

Getting back to a routine was a challenge but we are all doing our best.  It took me a while but I finally found my creative muse and that has helped me so much.  I have three shows coming up, Sugar Plum Bazaar, A Paris Street Market and Horseshoe Market starting at the end of April.

I always like to create new items for the shows, so although I am feeling overwhelmed  it helps me to have a real deadline to have some things done.

I love vintage pattern illustrations.  I have been collecting them for some time.  I will provide more details in a posting later but this is a sneak peek at my newest items...still in progress

Alex's 10th Birthday Sleepover Pary & Cake

If you ask my son Alex what he wants to be when he grows up, he will tell you:

"A Lego engineer/designer,
 or
a  Paleontologist
or
an Artist.."

The order  to all the above will vary on a given day, but his 3 dream jobs have remained the same for several years now.  He will be 10 years old on Sunday, March 23rd.

However, since the kids and I will be on the road, on the way to Austin, TX  (to visit grandma Ruth)  on the 23rd, we had Alex's Birthday Sleepover party last night.  He invited his two best friends, Ryan and Billy.  The boys had a fun sleepover and stayed up way past their bedtimes.  In fact, they are all taking long naps this afternoon!

Each year, my kids choose a theme for their birthday party.  This year Alex chose Dinosaurs.  I gave Alex tracing paper and asked him to draw dinosaurs for his birthday cake.  I took the drawing and transferred it to the cake and painted it to Alex's specifications.  Yes, I am taking art direction from my little artist who I think is much more talented than me.

This is our collaborate art effort on cake:

Alex's original sketch.

Naturally, we had to incorporate Legos into the cake.  The candles are Lego candles!  Most of Alex's birthday gifts are Lego's or books about Lego building.

Alex's Mix Media Art

My son Alex is in the 4th Grade and will be 10 years on March 23.  He is extremely creative.  His artwork was selected to represent his school at an art show at Red Rocks Community College.  The art teacher selected one boy and girl for each grade at the elementary school.

We attended the open house last Friday night.  I asked him to tell me about his artwork before we arrived at the open house.  All he could say was, "I can't explain it, you have to see it first."

Alex's favorite things to play with are Legos and Dinosaurs.  Truth is, he is somewhat obsessed with both.  He loves to read and learn about dinosaurs on a daily basis.

His artwork reflects his love of dinosaurs.  We are all very proud of Alex's accomplishments in his Art class.

A Sampling of Isa Creations at the Pink Attic Cat

I can't believe another week has come and gone.  I worked with Kindergarten and 4th grade this past week when I worked as a substitute teacher on Monday and Wednesday.  I am scheduled to work next Monday, in my son's 4th grade class.  This will be a first for both of us.

My 16 year old daughter has been driving herself to school for the past 2 weeks, soon after she got her driver's license.   Although part of me is still getting use to the very idea of her driving herself to and from school, I have to admit it has been nice to not have to pick her up from school after Tennis practice.  However, on days like today where the wet icy snow keeps falling.... I worry.

My son Alex's artwork was selected to represent his 4th grade class (a boy and girl is selected per grade).  The open house at a local college is tonight.  Both of my kids are creative, however, more recently I see more of it in Alex.  Laura is too busy with high school AP classes and Tennis.

I was at the Pink Attic Cat on Tuesday.  I love how Amy always transforms her shop to reflect the seasons.  Although it is snowing as I write this, we have had a small peak into Spring.

Yeah!  Spring is on it's way, even if we are in a pattern of Snow, Sunshine, Snow again!!

Anyway, here are a few pictures of a sampling of Isa Creations handcrafted items at the Pink Attic Cat located at  2555 W. Alamo, Littleton, CO 80123.  Visit the Pink Attic Cat's Facebook page here.
